What ever happened to just being nice. The Faceless anger and hatred in Social Media.

What ever happened to just being nice.  The Faceless anger and hatred in Social Media.  I have chosen to remain silent until now. Social media the Internet and many people are getting angrier and angrier and showing more hatred towards each other than ever before. I used to enjoy looking at Facebook everyday and seeing the happy posts, the heart warming pictures, and the cute little sayings that people would post.  I used to enjoy seeing what people were doing, thinking or even making.  The posts on Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets were, for the most part, simple and light hearted.

Lately, however, I see nothing but hatred, anger, bickering and people just being mean to each other. It seems as though social media has turned to be an outlet for people to let out their feelings but this time in a negative way. I understand that times are tough and people need to express how they are feeling, however, the constant bickering, fighting and hatred has to stop.

Whether it is politics, recent news, the economy, tragedy, religion, or people in general, we are a nation known as the “United” States of America.  One nation under GOD.  We are all human beings living on this great planet called earth.  We all have a beating heart, lungs from which we breathe and many other gifts that we share with everyone.

As I said the hatred and anger must stop. There is good in the world and there is bad but one fact remains that we are all here and having to deal with each other, good or bad.

I know I can’t change the world but I’m going to make a promise that from now on every post, comment, or conversation I have with  people will be as positive as possible.  I will look for the good in others and share it.  I cannot take part in the anger nor will I.

Life is too short as we all know too well.  Live, love, forgive and be united.

Kevin DiMinno aka all around good guy…..at least that is my goal.

Not a care in the world – to be a kid again.

How many of you remember being a kid

and not having a worry or care in the world?

To be a kid again.

Image

I look at my own children today, as well as many other children, and I see the innocence, the hope, and the way that the simplest things can make them happy.  I see a world that is very small in their eyes, to them everything is good, everyone is kind and life, for the most part, is simple.  We as parents see to it that they are sheltered from all the ”adult” things that we have to deal with.  To them, their world is filled with love and light.

As a child, I can remember this very feeling.  To me, my whole world was my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles as well as cousins.  The only thing I had to worry about was whether or not I would be allowed to stay up late on Tuesday nights so I could watch Laverne and Shirley.  Other than that, and maybe a few other small things, my life went on without a care in the world.  I was innocent, naive and protected  I never knew the hardships that went on in the world, with my family or others who were close to me.

As adults we are not so lucky when it comes to worrying.  We have a never-ending list that consists of all the things in life that we have to deal with.  Things like, money, jobs, family, friends, health, divorce, feuds, and other life events.  In addition to this we have the stress of world factors like wars, the economy, the environment, killings of innocent people, attacks from other countries who want us to disappear,  whatever encompasses our life.  As adults we literally have to worry about it all.

Lately however, our list is getting a lot bigger when it comes to worrying.  Today we have to worry about such things as senseless acts of violence, abuse, bullying, terrorism, extreme weather, pollution, earthquakes, asteroids, total apocalypse and the list goes on.  Each of these strip the innocence and hope right from a child.  As much as you try to shelter your children from the harsh realities of LIFE there comes a time when they are going to be thrown right into the crazy world that we live in.

Kids are tough, they are resilient, they can bounce back from things better than we can, but there are some things that just can’t be undone or avoided.  It is these things that scare me today.  How do you tell your child that some sick individuals or groups want to hurt them or their parents?   How do you explain that their good friend is not coming back because they were killed in some tragic event? How do you explain that life is so hard at times.  They are after all, children, who should be innocent, carefree and happy.

My three year old lives in a perfect world because she really doesn’t understand any of the craziness that goes on.  But as children get older they begin to see or hear things that go way beyond what most of us had to deal with when we were growing up.  The world is now much bigger and outside factors take their toll on them.  As I said before their innocence is stripped from them, their hope is dwindling and the outlook on life is getting pretty scary.

These are some crazy times that we live in now and the older I get the more I worry about my children, and the children of the world as a whole.  Will life ever get back to being carefree and innocent, we will ever go back to a time when all you had to worry about was a silly TV show.  I really don’t think so, but I sure hope that we do.

I think about the future way too often now.  Will my kids be alright when I am gone, what will the world be like for them?  As much as I would like to, I can’t protect them from everything, nor can I protect myself.     .

To be a kid again? – Well it all depends.

Always open

Just in case I didn’t mention it – we have been open now since November 2010 literally every day.  So that means nearly 740 days that we have been open without closing or being down or ever leaving a customer stranded. Not even Hurricane Sandy, or the wacky winter storm of 2011 stopped me.  Now that is dedication.

Social Media and Customer Service – the good and the bad

Social Media can be a great tool for businesses.  It allows them to spread the word about their company to thousands of people through posts, sharing, reposts etc. More people today rely on social media as a form of communication and information gathering than ever before.  Social media is a great public relations tool for companies and their customers, in that, any positive review or comment can be spread so fast to so many people.  However, their is a dark side to social media as well, and that is the negative feedback and comments.  No matter how good your business is, you are bound to get some negative posts or comments that  must be addressed quickly and properly.

Take my recent experience with a mortgage company.  We are in the process of refinancing our home.  Well, due to the recent hurricane that hit Connecticut the mortgage company informed us that the banks wanted our home to be re-appraised to prove that there was no damage to the home.  This second appraisal would cost an additional $150.00.  Needless to say that when I found out about the added fee for the second appraisal I was very upset. I told my agent that I had no choice in paying the fee and that this was really troubling to me.  But again, I had no choice. in the matter and would pay the fee.

Now, imagine if I had taken my complaints to the social media network or via word of mouth where literally thousands of people would hear how upset I was.  Well, the difference between a great company that cares about customer service and one that does not is how they handle public relations, especially in dealing with those customers that are upset or dissatisfied.   As a manager of your own company, how would you handle this situation or other situations where your customers are very upset with you?  Some would just choose to ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, others wouldn’t care at all and would just let the customer remain upset where others would do everything they could to “make the customer happy”.  I am proud to report that this mortgage company did everything they could to make me happy.  To my surprise my agent was able to work with the bank and allow pictures to be taken of the house to prove that no damage was done in lieu of getting a second appraisal .   To me, this is “top-notch customer service” that I will most certainly praise in all of my social media outlets as well as word of mouth.  It is this extra effort that keep customers like me praising companies and in turn earning them more business.

So the lesson here is, how you choose to deal with your customers will directly affect your business one way or another so you better treat them right.

Some of the most fun I have had….

This has to be the most fun I have ever had doing what I do, which is, being a social media consultant. Being a consultant allows me to literally become the voice of a business. Working with the client I help develop this “VOICE” and then literally take on the persona of that voice when I am online representing them.

One of my favorite personas is when I post as a talking lighthouse. The Huntington Lighthouse Preservation Society and the lighthouse itself is a non profit organization with a presence on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. With this account I actually speak as though I am the lighthouse. And let me tell you, the lighthouse has quite the personality. The lighthouse talks to boats as they pass by, and also talks to people in the surrounding area of Huntington, NY,and Long Island. Everyone knows that there is no one in the lighthouse, yet it still talks to people as though it can see everyone, and people actually talk back. And the ironic thing is, that as I post for the lighthouse and talk to people, boats or whatever, I am over 2 hours away from it. In other words I post totally blind in many cases. Of course the locals, who run the lighthouse preservation society, do feed me information as needed so my posts make sense. I also have to keep an eye on the weather seeing how, on occasion, where I am located it may be sunny and the lighthouse has torrential downpours.

It is a great experience where I get to post to over 6,400 friends and fans and literally get to know people on a personal level. Let me tell you I am having a great time and have been very successful in getting the audience engaged, getting more likes, retweets and posts than ever.

On other accounts I have taken on the VOICE of a BBQ rubs company that has a “wise guy” personality, I have also become the VOICE of a local chamber of commerce, and many others, each with their own VOICE or personality.

My latest project is taking on the voice of an old car that was in a family for over 50 years. The car was recently restored and is now back to it’s full glory. The unique thing is that the car posts as though it is the grandfather of the family who owned it. The grandfather died many years ago and never dreamed of having the car look as good and be cared for so much. “He” (I) tells the story of his life, retelling his old life experiences, jokes, as well as rants and raves about what is going on today.

Needless to say I love my job because I get to make other people smile, converse or think about life in general. In a sense, this is the best group of “jobs” I have ever had.
